Scotsman Joyce Gets His ‘Revenge’ In The Ring!
Denaby welterweight boxer Tommy Joyce was chosen to represent England at the beginning of his international career. Now they have refused him training facilities . . . . because he’s fought too many times for Scotland.
Tommy was snubbed by the England authorities when he asked to train at Crystal Palace, but he gained his revenge in great style last Thursday when he fought for Scotland against the Sassenachs, and gave a boxing lesson to Kelvyn Travis of Oldham.
Tommy helped Scotland gain a 3-0 lead in the contest, but England fought back to win 6-4.
Scotland Squad
Tommy has now been chosen for the Scotland training squad for the Commonwealth Games, scheduled for Edinburgh in June.
But he is going to have difficulties in finding the time and money to reach the training centre in Scotland, which is why he applied to train with the England squad . . . including his friends Howard Hayes (Doncaster) and Allan Richardson (South Elmsall).
Refused
The reply came last week—a refusal “owing to his being picked so many times for Scotland”.
Tommy boxed for Scotland against Rumania three years ago, and was the only winner in a 9-1 defeat. England then picked him, but the opposition complained. . . it was Romania again.
Said Tommy’s manager, Mr Ernest Oxer, Tommy really wanted to win this fight against England as a kind of ‘revenge’ and he was definitely the most impressive winner of the night.
