“Gift” Goals for Bourne.

Denaby United 2 Bourne Town 3

Christmas is some time off yet, but Bourne got three of their presents early on Saturday – in the 42nd, 56th and 63rd minutes – handed to them by Denaby and all but tied up in ribbon.

Even Bourne must admit that they were the luckiest team playing on Saturday to come away from Tickhill Square with two points, Denaby set themselves up nicely, 5 minutes before half-time with a two-goal lead, and their supporters could only watch horrified as they gave Bourne their first goal, then the equaliser, and finally the winner.

Player manager Harry Hough had done quite a bit of work after their 7-1 defeat by Worksop and Saturdays team had Born on the defensive from the off. At the side of the Denaby forwards, well backed up by a defence which was quick to move up in attack, Bourne looked slow and disorganised.

Faster Tackling.

Denaby were faster to the tackle and to the ball, and in the ninth minute were put ahead by the persistency of centre forward Gray. On the edge of the penalty area with no one to pass to he squeezed the ball past four defenders and hit it past Durno.

With the chances that came their way Denaby could easily have had another three in the first half-hour.

Bourne were not without their opportunities, but Jepson, after mis-kicking from a few yards out the 25th minute, managed to do the same thing from the same spot 10 minutes later. Even when Harper managed to get the ball past Hough it rebounded off the post into the goalkeeper’s arms.

5 min before half-time left-winger Roebuck
made it 2-0, and everything looks set for a comfortable half-time lead and they wind up well in sight – but then the festive spirit got into Denaby.

In the 42nd minute Ainscough tripped Harper and Notley had no difficulty in scoring with the penalty.

But Denaby still forced the pace after half-time, chasing everything, then, making their first worthwhile attack of the second half, in the 56 min, Bourne were handed their second present.

Own Goal.

Scarborough sent across a hard, low centre. Denaby half back Bellamy went for it, got a boot to it, and volley it past Hough to bring Bourne level. Bellamy, making his debut, held his head in his hands, but the damage was done.

Denaby straps of accidents continue 7 min later. Whant sent a straightforward pass back to Hough and followed it up to cover his goalkeeper – but slipped, collided with Hough, and not the ball clear out of both of them to Scarborough. The winger gratefully accepted it and pushed it into the net for the winner, while Hough and Whant could only sit and watch helplessly.

To the end of the match Bourne played their best football of the afternoon, but the Denaby defence held firm. Bourne were lucky, but Denaby have only themselves to blame for throwing away what had looked a certain first win.

Team:
