Fatal Accident at Denaby Main

An inquest was held at the Montagu Cottage Hospital Saturday, on the body of Samuel Houghton, miner, of Denaby who died in the institution on Wednesday night, having been admitted on Tuesday, suffered from injuries received while following his employment.

Dr D Wightman, the coroner for the district, held the enquiry, which was attended by Mr Mellors, deputy Inspector of Mines, and Mr Stenton was foreman of the jury.

Decease, stated that Houghton was filling a tub of call, when in consequence of get rather too much on the corf he knocked down a prop, which calls a quantity of “softs” to fall upon him, striking him on the back and partially burying him.

Witness gave the alarm and deceased was got out, and at once removed to the Montagu Cottage Hospital.

A verdict of “accidental death” was returned.
