Serious Charge Against a Conisborough Gentleman.
On Tuesday, at the office of the Magistrates Clerk, Driffield, before Mr. H. Holt. Mr. Harry Sykes Witty (30), mining engineer, Conisborough, surrendered to his bail on a charge of unlawfully and indecently assaulted a domestic servant recently in the service of his brother, at Driffield, on the 13th and14th instant.
Mr F. J. Bingham appeared for the prosecution, and Mr. Drinkrow for the defence.
Major Bower, the Chief Constable, was also present. From the of evidence of the complainant which occupied over two hours in hearing, it appeared on Thursday evening prisoner came on a visit his brother, and at once made improper remarks to her. The girl gave evidence as the prisoner’s subsequent misconduct. Finally she got away from him and left the house, and went to her parents at Garton, a village four miles away.
The prisoner was committed to taka his trial at the next Quarter Sessions, bail being allowed.
The prisoner is well connected, and during the hearing of the case the street outside the office was crowded.
