Shock for Socialists.
County Council Candidate Bottom of Poll.
In the County Council by-election, Conisborough on Saturday, the “official” Socialist ran last, being separated from the winner by two Independents.
This is a severe blow to the Labour Party for Mr. Tom Williams, M.P., and Mr. Herbert Smith had addressed meetings and urged miners to vote for the “official” Socialist.
The seat had been held for nine years by Mr, A. Roberts, an “official” Socialist.
The anti-Socialist vote was 1,747 and the Socialist vote was 1,423.
The figures were:
J. T. E. Collins (Workers’ Candidate)… 976
T. Morgan (Independent) 942
H.H. Wray (Independent) 805
J. Jerram (Official Socialist) 447
Mr. Collins is a member of the Conisborough Urban District Council having been elected three times, twice as Socialist and in 1931 Workers’ Candidate beating his Socialist opponent in a straight fight.
