A Conisbrough Presentation
Mr and Mrs J. W. Fowler.
A pleasant ceremony in the station master’s office at Conisbrough L. N. E. R. Station on Friday marked the appreciation of his fellow employees at Conisbrough and friends at Denaby Main Colliery and the Denaby and Cadeby home coal catering committee, of the valued services of Mr John William Fowler, of 36, Tennyson Avenue, Mexborough, who retired on January 14th after 47 years in railway employ.
Mr Thomas (station master) presided at the presentation to Mr Fowler of a walking stick, inscribed “Presented to G. W. Fowler by the L. N. E. R. Staff at Conisbrough on his retirement 14th January., 1947,” and of a leather shopping bag to Mrs Fowler, and paid tribute to his work on behalf of the railway company. His youthful appearance and vigour, Mr Thomas said, belied Mr Fowler’s age.
The presentations were made by Mr E. J. Corley, signalman at Denaby Crossing, and practically all those present at the ceremony added their tribute, among them being Messrs A. E. Sharman (goods clerk), F. C. Hayhurst (booking clerk), R. Hogarth (relief signalman) and a workmate, Mr J. A. Davies (Lowfield Box). Mr and Mrs Fowler both replied.
Mr Fowler who has retired and reaching the age limit of 65 has been single men at the Low field Box since February 3, 1921. He joined the railway service with the old Great Central Railway in 1900, serving in the Signal Fitting Department at Stairfoot and then had a period at Mexborough in no 5 and 4 boxes before going to Denaby Lowfield.
