Slandered Denaby

Apology Tendered.

A short time article appeared in paper called “The Christian Budget,” which proposed to give a description of the colliery colony at Denaby Main, and which characterised that place as “the worst village in England.” This was indignantly resented as a gross calumny, Mr. Parrott, of the Miners’ Association, taking up the cudgels along with others in defence of Denaby Main. Last week the paper referred to contained a retraction and apology, as follows:

“The Denaby and Cadeby Main Collieries, Limited, (who are the only colliery proprietors in the vicinity of the Tillage), and who are, therefore, indicated by our Special Commissioner the colliery company to whom the article referred, have complained to us of the language used by the writer, and the imputations conveyed against them by the article.

“We have felt it our duty to enquire into the matter, and having done so, we take this early opportunity of admitting that we cannot justify the language used in that article.

“We see no grounds for imputing any mismanagement or impropriety to the Denaby and Cadeby Collieries Ltd, and admit that the article is couched in unjustifiable terms.

“We therefore beg to express our regret for having published the article, and tender our apology to the Denaby and Cadeby Collieries Ltd, for having done so.

“We have also undertaken, in fairness to the company, to pay all costs incurred by them in connection with the proceedings they have instituted against us complaining of the language used.”
