Sergeant Major George Ernest Baker

Sgt.-Major Baker, son of Mr. Henry Baker, J.P., Albion House, Conisboro’, died in hospital in France on April 17th, of wounds received in action.
He was formerly well known and esteemed in Conisboro’. Before joining his regiment in France last June he had for four years been engaged in recruiting in Edinburgh. When he left for active service an Edinburgh paper had the following comment:
“Sgt. Baker has been at the recruiting office for four years. and has been acting as sergeant-major for several years. During that time his services have been most valuable to the military authorities, and thousands of young men have found their way into the Army through his capable hands. He is a clever, smart, and valuable ‘N.C.O.,’ and a splendid type of the “contemptible little Army. He always put . his country first, his regiment next and himself last. He is a man of splendid- physique and a first-class advertisement of the Scots Guards.”
Sgt. Baker leaves a widow and two children.
At Tuesday’s sitting of the Doncaster Rural Tribunal a vote of condolence men with Mr. Baker (who is a member) was passed.
