Mr Spencer Baker.
Clerk to Conisbrough Urban Council.
Interest in Local Government.
The death in a Doncaster nursing home ofMr Spencer Baker of Bessacar, deprives the Conisbrough district of a well-known local Government personality. Mr Spencer Baker, had been Clerk to the Conisbrough Urban Council for 16 years. He was 64, and had only been admitted to the nursing home a week before his death, although he had been ill for about a month. His death came as a shock to his many friends in the district.
A native of Newcastle under Lyme (staffs). Mr Baker came to Doncaster in 1909. He was one of the founder members of the Old Doncaster “Parliament,” and also of the old Doncaster Folk house. He had written many articles on local government and political science, on which subject he was something of an authority, and also presented papers at the annual conference of the Urban District Councils Association.
Other organisations with which he had been connected, were the Doncaster Scientific Society, the Doncaster branch of the League of Nations Union, and an amateur dramatic Society. During the Great War he was a member of the Doncaster Volunteer Force.
A liberal in politics, Mr Baker contested theHydePark Ward fora place onthe Doncaster Council in 1920, but was defeated by 449 votes by Ald W.Crookes
He leaves a widow, one son, Mr Morris Baker, and one daughter, Miss Margaret Baker, who is serving as a Sergeant in the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force.
