Stack Fire

February 1887

Leeds Times – Saturday 12 February 1887

Stack Fire.

On Saturday afternoon a haystack, the property of the Denaby Colliery Co., in a field near the brickyard, took fire, and though attempts were made to extinguish the flames, it was only by cutting into the stack and removing a portion that the whole of the stack was prevented from being consumed.

It is estimated that the stack contained about eight tons. More than half was lost.

Nothing is known as to the origin of the fire.

It is singular that the stack of the previous season’s hay on the same site was partially you consumed by fire during the strike at the colliery in 18S5.
