Denaby Man Wounded

Private C Swipes (second Yorks and Lancs) of 33 Maltby Street, Denaby main, has been wounded in action, and now lies in the Royal Herbert hospital, Woolwich, where he is making satisfactory progress.

He enlisted shortly before the outbreak of war, and went to France on 8 February 1915 His battalion was called upon to withstand a German gas attack, and he was wounded in the back by a high explosive shell which burst over his head while he was carrying rations up a road near Ypres.

He was knocked down by the explosion, and then two pieces of shrapnel became embedded in his back, narrowly missing the spine.

The shrapnel has now been extracted and he landed in hospital on Christmas Day.
