The Writing on the Wall

A man who chalked on the house of Cadeby miners’ election candidate a notice appealing for support for rival candidates had to appear at Doncaster on Saturday.

He was John Gough, miner, of 111, Doncaster Road, Denaby, and he was fined 10s. for chalking on a dwelling house.

Sergeant Waugh said he saw defendant chalking on the wall of Mr. Gregory respecting an election at the colliery.

Defending, Mr. W. L. Crawford said it was unfortunate that proceedings had had to be taken to court. Mr. Gregory was a candidate for a Y.M.A. election on June 24 and Gough chalked on his wall “Vote for Roberts, Maiden, Swaby and Harrop for justice, fairplay and honesty.”

A A bye-law stated that it was an offence for a person to chalk on a building without the permission of the owner, but defendant did not know that and be expressed his regret.
