Theft of Trousers at Conisborough

Robert Desborough, a small boy of 14 years of age, was charged in custody with having stolen a pair of trousers the property of Albert Sorsby Wood , at Conisborough on 30th October

Margaret Wood, wife of Albert Sorsby Wood, stated that on Wednesday she hung a pair of trousers belonging to her husband in the yard. She afterwards missed them.

PC Thompson showed them to her afterwards. They were valued at 2/6.

PC Thompson, stationed at Conisborough stated that he visited the house of Mrs Desborough, the previous afternoon and she handed the trousers (produced) to him.

He apprehended the boy the same night and charged him with having stolen the trousers.

He said: “I found them in a back lane,” but then afterwards said “I took the clothes peg off the line, took the trousers off the line, and took them home.”

The prisoner was ordered to receive six strokes with the birch rod.
