Thunderstorm

In last night’s violent but short lived thunderstorm, Low road, Conisbrough and Doncaster Road, Denaby, were flooded up to depth of a foot in places. The storm lasted for less than an hour.

At the Conisbrough Fire Station, Station Officer Broad said that it had only been as bad as this once before, when the fire station itself had been flooded. At its height, the floodwaters extended along Doncaster Road, Bath Balby Street and onto Denaby police station, but they subsided to a low level in a short time and the fire brigade were called out to pump the water away.

One victim was Stephen Martin (17), of Windmill Avenue, Conisbrough. He had just turned off Station Road onto low road on his way home from work in his father’s car when he was caught in the heavy downpour. The force of the water lifted the car off the road and onto the pavement and it crashed against a lamp standard severely damaging the nearside wing.
