Youth Visit

The 14 members of Denaby Tom Hill Youth Club who have been spending a fortnight in Berlin, returned home on Saturday.

This is the first organised group from a youth club in the West Riding to visit Berlin since the war. Mr Walsh, leader of the use club, was in charge of the party of boys and girls between the ages of 14 and 21. This was a return visit to the homes of boys and girls from the Albert Schweitzer School, Berlin, who visited Denaby and Conisbrough last October.

The Denaby people were staying in the Neukollen area of Berlin. They visited the Eastern sector where impressions vary but in the main they found it very quiet and in the words of Mr Walsh there was “an appearance of lifelessness.”

From Hanover to Berlin the party went by air and for all members of the party except Mr Walsh it was the first time they had flown. On their arrival in Berlin they were welcomed in the reception room of the City Hall. On their second day in Berlin they spent three hours on a sightseeing tour.

Mr Walsh said that their reception by the people they met was very pleasant and courteous. The party visited various youth clubs in Berlin and Mr Walsh was invited to the opening of a new club. They were all impressed by the fine youth clubs they visited. Mr Walsh said they appeared to be more specialist than British Clubs. Mr Walsh said it was hoped that these exchange visits will continue.
