Trophy for Whit Walk.

Walter Brown, the original winner of the tremendously popular Conisbrough Whit Walk, died a short time ago, but his name is to live on through a trophy which is to be presented for the first time at this years event.

The Walter Brown Trophy has been donated by Mrs Mary Brown, of Athelstane road, Conisbrough, the wife of the man who won the race in 1960. She will personally present the award to the winner of the specially introduced 16 years and underclass, which is itself appearing for the first time.

The many spectators who are expected to line the 4 1/2 mile course on Whit Monday, as in past years, will probably see a much larger field this year, for the two-mile radius limit on entries are now being dropped, organiser Mr Gomer Davies told the “South Yorkshire Times” on Tuesday.

Mr Davies, licensee of the Eagle and Child, Conisbrough, said, “Anyone can take part this year and we think this will improve the walk both from a quality, and a quantity point of view.”

Already as a result of this step enters coming from amateurs in Sheffield, Doncaster, and infinitely. They will compete for four trophies. Besides the junior award there are the Mary Davies Cup (men’s scratch), the John Smith Cup (men’s handicap), the Williams Stones cup (Veterans race) and the Buxton, and Reagan Cup (ladies race).

Popular last year and making a reappearance this Whitsuntide is the Edlington pipe band.

The course remains unchanged, starting at 10 am from the Eagle and Child and circling the village, through Chambers Avenue, Welfare Avenue, Northcliffe road, Church Street, Low Road and backup New Hill to the Hotel.
