Two Colliers Killed.
Ex-Soldier’s Neck Broken at Denaby.
Shortly after two o’clock yesterday afternoon, a dataller, named James Vernon (26), 11, Cawood Street, Mexborough, was instantly killed —his neck being broken—by a heavy fall roof at the Manyers Main No. 3 pit.
He was an ex-soldier, having served with distinction in the Boer War, while a pathetic feature of the case is that the deceased was only married at Easter.
A miner, named William Froggatt (59), who had been employed at the Denabv mine 36 years, living at 88, Doncaster Road, Denaby, died the Fullerton Hospital yesterday morning from injuries sustained in the Montagu district near his working place through fall of roof on Wednesday.
His mate, George Pickard, was also knocked down the fall, but, made brave attempts to rescue his unfortunate companion.
Both inquests will held to-day.
