Unforgiving Neighbour

William Smith, milk seller Conisborough, was summoned for committing an assault on Elizabeth Ann Hawkins, married woman, also of Conisborough.

Mr Hall appeared for the complainant, and A.M.Wilson represented the defendant.

Mr Hall in opening the case said all they wanted was peace, but sometime ago there was an action about a dog between the parties, and judgement was given against defendant for £21, and ever since that time, whenever he met complainant or Dr Hill’s, he always used insolent language and behaved himself improperly, and on the day in question defendant met complainant on the causeway at Conisborough and “digged her” with his elbow. He did not want a fine imposing, but they wanted the defendant to behave himself.

Mr Wilson said he was glad that that view had been suggested, and, after consultation with his client, said he was prepared to give an undertaking there should be no further molestation, and would pay all the costs in the case.

The Bench agreed to this course, and the costs were paid, amounting to 19 shillings.
