Urgent Need for Drivers for Meals on Wheels Service

There is an urgent need for drivers to staff the Conisbrough and Denaby Meals on Wheels Service for local old folk.

There are now only two drivers available to deliver meals from the N.C.B. Manvers Main Canteen to a luncheon club at Denaby Community Centre and to the homes of local old people, Mr. E. T. Mellor, clerk to Conisbrough Urban Council and secretary of the Old People’s Welfare Committee which sponsors the meals service, told the ‘South Yorkshire Times’ on Tuesday. ‘The need for drivers is becoming desperate. We cannot afford to go on paying Council drivers to do the work. If we had more volunteers we could work a rota system so drivers would perhaps have to turn out only once or twice a month.

About a year ago the committee bought a van to deliver roughly 60 meals on two days a week. This took a large slice out of the finances and if this valuable service is to continue, volunteers must be found.

The service runs each Wednesday and Friday, and for a volunteer driver would involve work between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
