The Fatal Accident at Denaby Main Colliery
On Tuesday an inquest was opened at Mexborough, touching the death of George Nattrass, aged 30 years, and Joseph Hough, aged 34 years, who were killed by a large mass of stone falling in the engine plane on Sunday last, at the Denaby main colliery.
The deceased Nattrass, was a material witness for one of the men charged with rioting at Thorncliffe on Saturday last, at Barnsley.
His father, it may be stated, was killed in a pit, whilst engaged in the same kind of work on a Sunday morning a short time ago.
In consequence of the bodies of the men being laid in the Doncaster and Rotherham Division seven jury man were empanelled from each district. After the bodies had being viewed and the coroner had satisfied himself as to their deaths, the enquiry was adjourned into 2 March in order that the government inspector may be present at the enquiry, and have an opportunity of viewing the spot where the accident took place.
Hough leaves a widow and two children. Nattrass was only on Saturday, a witness at the Barnsley police court, when he gave evidence in favour of one of the prisoners charged with being concerned in the Thorncliffe riots. He leaves a widow and four children, and the unfortunate woman is again near her confinement.

The adjourned inquest relative to the death of the two miners name Nattrass and Hough, were killed by a fall of stone at the Denaby main colliery, on Sunday, 13 February, was held yesterday afternoon at the George and Dragon Inn, before Mr Webster, coroner, when a verdict of “accidental death” was returned.
