Clear Prank
Denaby Youths who White Washed Cottage

How two Denaby pit hands whitewashed the front of a cottage and broke a window, was described at the Doncaster West Riding Police court on Saturday.

They were Thomas Scott (17) and William Gibson (17), and were fined 30 shillings each for damaging a cottage at 1, Maltby Street, Denaby, on November 4 to the extent of 7s 6d.

Prosecuting on behalf of the owners, the Amalgamated Denaby Colliery Ltd, Mr CR Marshall said on November 4 the tenant of the cottage was attracted by some youths talking together outside. He suddenly heard a splash and a crash and going upstairs found a window broken. When he got outside he found the whole of the front of the cottage covered with whitewash.

The youths admitted throwing the whitewash and causing damage amounting to 5 shillings, and Gibson also of throwing a piece of coal and breaking the window.

Both boys pleaded guilty and expressed regret.
