Denaby United Sign Eight New Players
Denaby United, who begin their match programme this Saturday with a friendly away to Boston F.C.Avenue this week announced eight new signings and the retention of seven of last year’s players.
New signings include: Gordon Smith, a goalkeeper, and former Swansea Town and Frickley Colliery player; Jimmy Wiggles, a full-back who was formerly with Huddersfield Town and Ossett; Richard Barton, a wing half or forward, a former York City player, who has latterly been with Skegness Town; Brian Cooper, a centre half, who has played a full season with Doncaster Rovers Reserves; Ken Launders, an inside forward or winger, who has been with Wombwell for the past three seasons; Jeff Hancock, a centre forward from Elsecar Main and one of the leading goalscorers in the County Senior League for the past two seasons; Gerald Smith, a winger from Frickley, who has had experience with Bradford City and Scarborough; and Peter Cooper, a winger from Scarborough and formerly with Hallam.
Retained Men
Players retained by Denaby include: Collingwood (goalkeeper), Dodd and Ainscough (full-back), and Caunt and Mick Smith (forwards).
It is hoped that a number of local players, such as Albert Wright and Peter Hornet, who gave the club excellent service last season will again come along.
Opportunity will be given to any local youngsters wishing to break into the game. Training sessions are on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
John Roberts, a former Denaby player, will take over the duties of trainer.
