Late Goal Saves a Point

Denaby United 3 Grantham 3

Denaby got a point from Grantham’s visit to Tickhill Square on Saturday evening, Killourhy making the result 3-3 with four minutes to go.

Grantham were a yard faster on the ball then Denaby in the first half, though Denaby were almost entirely in the Grantham half, and the two goals Grantham scored before half-time both resulted from long clearances, one down the right wing catching Cox too far upfield to retrieve the danger, and the other down the left catching Jack Williams similarly on 1 foot. Hewitt (eight minutes) and McCartney (20 minutes) were the scorers.

The diminutive Windle, overshadowed by Lawrence and Wheat, like a boat beneath the rock of Gibraltar, produced a shining example of unceasing endeavour and made Denaby’s first goal scored in the 40th minute by Strachan.

Windle certainly delighted the crowd with a series of pretty touches and and unconquerable zest.

At half time then it was 2-1 in Grantham’s favour.

Windle finished off a Wright movement to make it 2-2 after 55 minutes, McCartney (from Hewitt) gave Grantham the lead in the 68th minute, and it was left to Killourhy to save a point with an opportunist goal four minutes from time.

The game lacked the snap and sparkle we have seen in Denaby in their long run of success since January; featured strong, clean kicking by Jack Williams, good work by Madin and a grand show by Windle, the Kilnhurst winger.
