Denaby Let in the Wisbech New Year
Denaby United 4 Wisbech 0

DENABY let in the Wisbech New Year with a spot of first footing which augured well. Four goals, two from Duggan one from Dixon and one from Womack were good cheer for a cold January day and while Wisbech must have felt as if they had killed the proverbial robin there was no fluke about Denaby’s success.

This was another typical example of the manner in which soccer luck good and bad evens itself out. Wisbech should have had at least a couple of good goals. That lovely shot in the second half from Nicholas which would have beaten the brilliant Williamson but smashed against the foot of the post and that escape when Friel had only to touch the ball in but elected to make assurance doubly sure with a full blooded drive and skied the ball high, wide and handsome. Grant too worked hard enough to merit a goal and Walker crossed the ball beautifully to make those chances but ill fortune for the Cambridgeshire side had a most powerful ally.

If Wisbech had beaten their luck it is doubtful they would have beaten Williamson. He positioned magnificently and his acrobatic agility produced one of his best performances to date. Indeed as often and as hard as the wisbech forward line shot or headed in near winners always it was into Williamson waiting arms. Gray positioned himself well particularly in the earlier stages of the game and Southall too often played so hard he seemed both forward and half back. The forward line of Austin, Duggan, Dixon, Holmes and Womack was entirely a success and the double headed spear of Dixon and Duggan provided a handful for the Wisbech defence.

Womack took a hard chance and excellently to score his goal and Dixon was also a beauty from a tailor-made pass from Duggan. What a lovely zig zagging movement that was to watch and what a lovely goal. Both Duggan’s goals were well taken and the time table was Dixon (13) Duggan (44) Womack (59) and Duggan (65)

This was a good start to the new year!
