In March 1926 a 5 year old is knocked down by a Trackless Car as he tried to cross the road near the Territorial Club
A judge decides on ‘excusable cruelty’ to a dog and a ex-policeman commits suicide in Denaby Wood

In April 1926 there was another fatal accident at Denaby Pit, causing the colliery to be ‘ set down’ for two days
another boy at the pit dies with suggestion of gas poisoning

In May 1926 the country experienced a General Strike which was over almost as soon as it began
but it left the miners on a National Coal Strike and we visit Conisborough and Denaby as the strike begins with pictures of the Soup Kitchen staff
and disturbances at Mexborough and Denaby Crossing

In June1926 the National Coal Strike begins
and we can witness the developments locally
A distress committee was set up and taking over by the Council
provisions were organised and rations determined
and the pay shed at the colliery was used for distribution to 13,000 people
The miners ” missionaries” from our area are touring the country and sending back reports as they travel and live in a coal lorry
A Scottish gentleman offers a loan of £5000 but then uses the money to buy shares!
and the committee discuss whether they can borrow the money from the colliery

The Coal strike entered its 10th week in July 1926 and we see 4,000 loaves awaiting distribution
and a Denaby miner who commits suicide
before he would apply for relief
There’s a running affray after a Midnight Orchard raid
and a fascinating story from the Hundred Courts as a forester is imprisoned in the Castle dungeons
A Conisborough man is made Director of the Sheffield Rep after a good experience in London’s West End
And Denaby & Cadeby’s cricket fame is spreading with pictures of their ‘stars’
August
In August 1926 another Murder hit the headlines in a family who lost their father in the Cadeby Disaster, and now a desperate brother kills his sister in Hooton Woods
There’s excavations at Conisborough Castle and the discovery of a Subterraneous passage
A Pony Driver dies because of wooden lockers and there’s new that the Pits are combining
The National Coal Strike causes more hardship with a proliferation of Coal thefts and a march by young, single miners deprived of relief
The first headmaster at the new Denaby Catholic school is appointed and the District Surveyor publishes a list of local footpaths
Denaby & Cadeby have another unbeaten month and sit proudly at the top of the Yorkshire Council with a 100% record
September
In September 1926 a Roman Catholic school was opened in Denaby
thanks to the work and persistence of Canon Leteux
The Denaby Ambulance Corps hold their Annual Inspection,
although below their full strength, 325 were present
The Hospital Sunday was held and we have a picture of the Hospital staff in attendance
The National Coal Strike continued and this reflected the desperate position of the Guardians and an outbreak of petty crimes
Denaby & Cadeby had their best season ever, remaining unbeaten but failing against Horsforth in the Council Test Match
October
In October 1926 the National Coal Strike continued for another month, as 8,000 free dinners are provided weekly by voluntary subscriptions
and we have a picture of children being fed at the Labour Club
The council debate with anger the reduction of relief by the Doncaster Guardians and the necessity to provide boots for children going to school without footwear
As attempts to resolve the Coal strike at local levels are proving fruitless
Denaby Roman Catholics opened their new schools and Conisbrough Wesleyan’s celebrate their Jubilee
There’s a story about a clever retriever and more atmospheric pictures of the times, including the Pasture Bridge being rebuilt
United have another good month including a 13-1 win over Guiseley but are knocked out of the cup by Mexborough after a replay and watched by a crowd of 5000!

United end their long run of defeats with an exhilarating end of year victory, over local rivals Mexborough,
and 10,000 watch he two derby games
