United smelled Blood But….
Arnold 3 Denaby United 2

What a tragedy! How near can a team get to winning, yet be so far away as Denaby, were on Saturday on their Midland League trip to Gelding Road, Arnold.

After leading 2-0 at half-time, and in the first half looking more like a side with 30 Midland league points instead of four, the Tickhill Square lads saw their first win of the season slip like sand from their fingers. It was enough to make you weep.

Perhaps the decisive factor in United’s first are superiority was a defensive covering. It was really excellent, as the Arnold attack tried to assert itself, but time and again had the ball, whipped from its toes by a Denaby player.

And it wasn’t just a case of stonewalling the hefty Arnold forward, for Denaby found the ability to turn from defence to attack.

Faster and Harvey were outstanding on the left flank, in particular the left are. He never let up, when he advanced behind a United attack in the 31st minute got his reward. Smith and Kelly are forced a corner and is Whittaker (D) lobbed the ball into the centre, Harvey was able to hit it home from a crowded area.

Grand goal.

Jubilant Denaby smell ed blood, and 4 minutes later scored a goal in a million. Outside left Whittaker (D). At shop first, and though his effort didn’t seem likely to trouble Carter, the Arnold keeper fumbled the ball on the ground.

Ever eager for opportunities like this, Kelly had the ball from the keeper’s fingertips and trapped it coolly backwards and inside right Smith running with a perfect timing anticipation to rocket Denaby into 2-0 lead.

Denaby could have and should have had four goals by half time. In particular a Cox shop close to half  time brought the best from  Carter, but it was not to be.

In the second half, Denaby looked as much out of the game as Arnold had been earlier. It was the old, old story of a hurried passes going astray. Burton made it 1-2 after 56 min, Jackson – who looked to be clearly offside – equalised after 70, and Burton made the coup de grace with 7 min to go. So Denaby left Arnold pointless, although the Nottingham club sugared the pill by presenting the visitors with a first-class match ball.

Team: Evans 7; Wroe 7, Foster 8; Woodger 7, Hinton 7, Harvey 8; Cox 7, Smith 8, Kelly 7, Whittaker (T) 8, Whittaker (D) 7
