The Old Tale from Denaby

Denaby United 0, Goole Town 3

Denaby United’s 3-0 defeat by Goole Town at Tickhill Square on Saturday was the old, old story of missed chances and poor finishing.

The Denaby forwards could never combine speed AND accuracy, as their Goole counterparts did. If they had, they might at least have taken a point.

But it didn’t happen that way, and after the end to end “sizing-up” attacks of the opening minutes, Goole were first into their stride. They went ahead after five minutes as centre-forward Barmby slipped the ball through Denaby’s retreating defence to Duncan. The outside right found BARMBY with his return pass, and although the Goole leader had his first shot blocked by Cooke, he hammered in the rebound.

TIPPED OVER BAR
Denaby were receiving little change from the Town defence, but came close to equalising through Woodger from a 17th minute free kick, just tipped over the bar by Gagen. The Goole ‘keeper did well a minute later to gather Hayden’s header.

Those shots were on target, but in the rest of the half both Smith and Wroe shot well over, to waste good chances created by the Whittaker brothers and Hayden.

After an opening burst in the second half Denaby were soon back on the defensive, and Goole went further ahead after 65 minutes as KELLY sent defenders the wrong way and footed the ball easily past Cooke.

Five minutes later Duncan’s neat flick across the goalmouth again found BARMBY, who made it 3-0.

For a time it looked as though Goole would get a handful, but the home side rallied and even hit back with 15 minutes to go as Smith hit his side’s best shot of the match, fingertipped round the post by Gagen.

Denaby played better football mid-field than some weeks, but with their lack of finishing power, plus the inability of the defence to stifle the elusive Barmby and his fellow forwards, the good work was of no avail.
