A Conisborough ReminiscenceImg_0594 bonfire

A photograph showing the bonfire on Minimoor to celebrate the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary. The month was part of rival festivities between residents of Burcroft to those of the then  Parish Council of Conisborough.

The Burcroft residents had formed a committee, “The Burcroft and Castle Inn Sports and Gala Committee” and arranged a tea, sports, a fireworks display and the bonfire. The latter included trees and loose timber from Conisboro’ Cliffe and the Castle grounds, and a number of barrels of tar from the local gasworks.

It was built to a height of forty feet and the glare from it could be seen for many miles. Included in the photograph is Mr. “Nobby” Guest (seated in trap), who is known throughout the district, and Councillor T. Gregory.

The inscription on the banner reads, “This fire was erected by the Burcroft and Castle Inn Sports and Gala Committee in the year 1911 in commemoration of King George and His Coronation. Pres., G. Jacobs, J. Shelton, G. Cocksedge.

Long Live The King.
