Two Imposters

Amos Allen and Thomas Bolton, who described themselves as miners from Denaby Main, were charged at Dewsbury, on Monday with begging.

After the police officer had given evidence, Bolton admitted that they had gone to shops and other places and represented themselves as miners from Denaby Main, out on strike

They showed cards, and solicited subscriptions.

Allen said the cards were given to him by a man at Barnsley, but as he could neither read nor write he did not know what was on them.

The Chairman said prisoners were not only doing wrong to the public, but to the locked out miners, because the former were filched of their money, thinking they were giving to a deserving cause.

These enterprising fellows were each sent to prison for one month with hard labour
