Unlawful Wounding Charge

Alfred Furness (44), miner, Clifton Street, Denaby, was at Doncaster on Tuesday remanded for a week on a charge of unlawfully wounding Robert Shaw, miner of 16 Balby Street, Denaby, by striking him with an axe.

Inspector Lofthouse said that on November 11 Shaw went to prisoner’s house. Furnish 11 breakfast, but admitted the complainant, who went inside and sat down. There was some conversation with regard to the prisoner’s furniture and Shaw storing it, as he anticipated he would have to go to hospital.

Furniss began to abuse complainant and his wife and for some reason called them “murderers.” Shaw attempted to get out of the out, but prisoner got all of him by the throat and then struck the man a blow on the forehead with an axe. Furniss then picked up a carving knife while holding the axe in his other hand.

The disturbance was eventually stopped by some men who came from outside on been attracted by Shaw, who broke a window to do so. Prisoner later said: “I aimed at getting them both, I should have got them.”

Furniss applied for legal aid and at the request of the Bench Mr W.L.Crawford consented to act on the man’s behalf.
