Shopping In Conisbrough and Denaby.

Only a few years ago, masses flowed into Leeds, Sheffield and other large shopping centres whenever they wanted more than just the provisions.

But have you noticed how so many town, large and small, are now going all out to provide their own super shopping precincts, and offer as good a shopping service as their big brothers – if not better?

Conisbrough and Denaby are by no means left behind in the race to provide more than adequate shopping facilities close at hand.

The first new shops were built in Conisbrough, for example, about five years ago, and since then other shops have followed suit, either by moving into new premises or by renovating not only their existing properly but their business methods too.

One of the first of the modern, clean-looking (and this is most important) shops to be opened in Conisbrough was that of the pharmaceutical chemist, Mr. E. H. Dickinson, of Church Street, Conisbrough.

Mr. Dickinson looks forward to the time when Conisbrough’s redevelopment is completed. ‘I think it is a very good thing – this development will make things better for everybody. I shall certainly be pleased when all the shops are finished and occupied.’

Mr. Dickinson’s main concern is for his shop to have an adequate stock of the needs of everyone. ‘I make a determined effort to carry as good a stock as any of the town shops,’ he said.

Mr. Dickinson is well known for his excellent photo equipment service, and is finding that photography is becoming an increasingly popular hobby. Consequently, his stocks have been increased to cope with the extra demand.

Other chemists who believe in moving with the times – and who took new premises over four years ago, are the firm of Brocklesby and Wright.

Mr. Wright is hoping that the development will improve Conisbrough considerably. ‘I believe that there are quite a lot of plans for future development and for the demolition of old property. I hope that with this people won’t want to travel out of Conisbrough to shop.’

For themselves, Brocklesby, and Wright make every effort to offer the widest range of chemists’ goods. ‘I think we can offer as good a service as any chemist’s shop,’ said Mr. Wright.

They can offer comprehensive ranges of cosmetics, baby products, photographic equipment, household goods and gardening requisites.

As for new premises, Mr. Wright believes that attractive premises go up, I think more people will stay and shop in Conisbrough.

‘Conisbrough as suffered from old dingy property, but the new shops should change all this,’ Mr. Wright added.
