The rearranged match between the above teams was played at Denaby on Thursday, before a very good midweek attendance stop Denaby, for the first time for several weeks had their full team out, and the visitors were also strongly represented.

The ground looked ominously muddy before the start, and play had not been in progress many minutes before it was seen that mistakes would be frequent. Denaby, however, kept their feet much better than their opponents, and it was not long before the Gainsborough defence was “rung in” at top pressure.

Centres from heavy install and Lindley repeatedly threatened Miss you, and several chances were missed, but after 20 minutes play Laverly opened the scoring with a fine cross shot.

Trinity pegged away, and though having much the worse of the exchanges managed to equalise through Winter. Hancock should have saved, but the heavy ball slipped through his fingers.

Denaby, however were quickly in front again, Doherty beating Hull who was having a great game in the Trinity goal, with a fast shot.

Trinity’s early combination was now conspicuous by its absence, and Denaby put up a brilliant show in the mud, the forwards running round the opposing halves, and giving the backs and goalkeeper no end of trouble.

At half-time, thanks primarily to Hull’s wonderful goalkeeping, Denaby only led by two goals to one.

The second half proved a triumph of Denaby, and a row for the visitors, who were more and more outplayed. Laverly was conspicuous with this quick dashes, and it was evident he and his colleagues were out for goals. Doherty in quick succession scored twice, and with a point he notched prior to half-time, doing the “hat-trick”, and before the end he got another.

Laverly, Linley (2) and Nimrod (2) also finding the net, the reaching of double figures just before the final whistle, was received with enthusiasm. Gainsborough, in the minutes of a tide of adversity, got another goal through Turner, but retired beaten to the world.
