Council Welcome Former Resident
Cheaper Gas
Mr Edward Wheelecor, Mayor of Chisholm, Minnesota (USA,) a native of Denaby, to whom reference is made elsewhere in this issue, was welcomed by members of Conisbrough Urban Council at their monthly meeting last night.
Mr Wheelcor spoke of the many improvements effected throughout the area during his absence, and particularly to the councils housing scheme and the Denaby Memorial Park.
It was announced that the estimate meeting would be held next Tuesday. Mr J. Webster, said he was not satisfied that the estimates could not have been got out before the election.
Mr R. J. Troughton said Mr Webster was not aware of the full facts.
Anxious Discussion
Mr Troughton, referring to a minute of the century and highways committee, said the committee had had an anxious discussion on the quality of some of the meat sold in Denaby upmarket. They were dissatisfied with the quality of some of the meat.
Mr Troughton referred with gratification to a letter from the colliery company which stated that the price of gas for street lighting purposes would be reduced to 4s. per thousand cubic feet has and from April 1st. It was gratifying that they considered that this reduction represented something like a 1 1/2d. rate.
When the minutes of the Allotments and Pleasure Grounds Committee were being confirmed, the chairman, Mr R. H. Shepard, mentioned that he believed an impression have been given that a certain person in the urban area was “letting allotments.” He wished to make it quite clear that tenants should apply to the council.
Mr H. Gomersall drew attention to a minute which recommended that Laburnum trees purchased for Conan Road in the councils housing estate, be planted in the Denaby Main Memorial Park instead of on the roadside, and said that the reason for their decision was that they had since learnt that Laburnum trees were poisonous and dangerous to children. Mr Gomersall also mentioned that consideration was to be given to the accommodation at their backs of Mexborough secondary school students.
Letter from Radium Centre.
Following a letter from the Sheffield radium centre, Mr R. J. Troughton and Dr J. McArthur (medical officer) areto visit the centre on Tuesday, April 21, for inspection, and to attend an address given by the Medical Director, Dr F. Ellie.
The Post Office telephone service proposed to erect a telephone kiosk on the footpath on Wembley Avenue, Conanby, and the council have approved the erection.
At a meeting of the allotments and pleasure grounds committee, the surveyor produces a planning estimate amounting to £518 for the erection of a proposed shelter in the Memorial Park at Denaby Main. It was moved by Mr T. Shephard, seconded by Mr J. Leatherland, and resolved that it be approved and referred to the finance committee. The minute was confirmed by the council.
