The Denaby Players.

Heckmondwike 3 Denaby United 5

Denaby were without Nimrod, their popular hard-working right half, and this is a deviated shifting of Tomkins to the right, and bringing in Lees at centre half. The changes, notwithstanding, the Denaby intermediate line, generally speaking, had their opponents on a “little bit of string,” and though Donald Lees found the stick it moored a bit trying, all three did wonderfully well, with Tomkins possibly the pick.

Hancock Welch and Lawler, hardly presented so soundly defence as usual, but heckmondwike’s goals were the outcome, not only of pluck, but of good fortune, which favours the brave. Hancock had no chance, save with the first, with the balls that beat him, and Rogan’s shot was quite the best of their afternoon.

As for the Denaby attack, it positively scintillated with sparkling titbits. Hopkinson was impartial in his distribution of play. Harrop and Hunter, the insides, were always doing allover things, whilst Dyal and Eyre, the former in particular, gave the home crowd, an object lesson in the art of centring. The shooting was hardly up to Denaby standard but, to get five goals with a heavy and skidding ball ought to satisfy all round. Denaby are now waiting to know who will be there next cup tie opponents.
