Mr G. W. Laughton
Conisbrough’s Oldest Businessmen

Conisbrough lost its oldest businessman on Saturday by the death in Doncaster of Mr George Watson Laughton, (76), of 16, Church Street, who for 52 years had carried on business as a jeweller and watch repairer.

He was a member of a well-known Doncaster family and second son of the late Mr G. W. Laughton of Hexthorpe. He died from pneumonia, his first attack of illness.

He had for many years been a member of St Georges Lodge of Freemasons, (Doncaster) of which he was a Past Master, and at one time performed a great amount of work for charitable causes in the district. As a double-bass player he organised and took part in concerts, and was responsible for the organisation of the fund by which the erection of the stocks in Conisbrough Coronation Park became possible.

In later years Mr Lawton assembled an interesting collection of old Conisbrough pictures and photographs. He leaves a daughter and a son.
