Mexborough and Swinton Times April 20, 1917
Denaby United 4 Grantham Avenue 0
At Denaby on Thursday evening before a fair attendance. The first half was stoutly contested, both goalkeepers having plenty of work to do. It was not until nearly 15 minutes had elapsed any scoring took place, when, following capital work by Harrop, Jones gave Dixon no chance with a rattling shot.
A fine movement by the visitors right saw Westwood clear excellently, and at the other end a good centre by Dyal was easily got away.
Both teams played taking football, though the Avenue forwards were rather erratic in front of Hancock. Several shooting straight at the goalkeeper, who cleared easily.
Towards the interval the home team attacked heavily, but the forwards were unlucky, a couple of good shots being charged down.
At the interval Denaby were leading 1-0
In the second half the homesters had most of the game. After Eyre had missed a good chance Dixon saved brilliantly three hot shots.
Hiarrop hit the crossbar with a capital long ranger, and then Eyre added a second goal. A moment later Mosley added a third.
The Avenue went away, but Woodruff and he Sharman were well held in check by Heppenstall and Westwood, though Hancock was tested several times, upon two occasions clearing splendidly. He saved a beauty from Hall, from a Sharman centre.
The visitors for a spell had the better of the game, but were very weak in front of goal.
A quarter of an hour from the finish Jones added a fourth for Denaby, who ran out easy winners.
Denaby’s record now reads:
Played 36, won 18, drawn 9 lost 9; goals for 72, against 42, points 45.
They are now on equal terms with Mexborough with one game less played.
