Accident at Denaby Main

July 1878

Mexborough times, 13th September.

Accident at Denaby Main Colliery.

On Tuesday morning last, about 7.30, a serious accident happened at the above colliery to a boy named Farmer, about 14 years of age.

It appears that a little engine is used for the purpose of running the slack screens, and it was the duty of the lad to oil and look after them.

By some means or other he appears to have got one of his arms fast in the “cog wheels.” When extricated, is arm was found to be completely “shattered.”

He was immediately conveyed to the Doncaster Infirmary.

What makes the pool or unfortunate lad’s case still worse, he was already blind in one eye.
