Too Much Wine, Too Little Sense
Denaby Man Makes a Fool of Himself
Causing an obstruction outside the entrance to the Empress Ballroom at Mexborough a 22-Years-old Denaby haulage hand became very violent when police officers intervened, said Chief Inspector B. E. Vaughan at Doncaster West Riding court on Saturday.
Later when the man was arrested taken to the police station in a van he threatened to commit suicide. “I think that was the wine talking,” commented the Inspector.
A total fine of £3 was imposed on, Bernard Doran of Annerley Street, Denaby for being drunk and disorderly and for stealing a 9d. wine glass belonging to Chennel and Armstrong.
Inspector Vaughan said P.c. White and Sergeant Murray noticed Doran standing on the footpath outside the ballroom pouring wine from head height into a wine glass. He was staggering about, shouting and causing an obstruction. When he was approached by the policemen he started struggling and became very violent, said the Inspector, and a police van had to be brought to convey him to the police station. During the struggle the glass, which he later admitted having stolen, was broken. Inspector Vaughan said Doran told the police when he was charged, “yes I had a lot of drink, five, six or seven bottles.”
