Denaby United Lose Top of The Table Position
Kiveton Park 2, Denaby United 0
Just how weak Denaby United’s defence is, was shown and exploited by Kiveton Park in their Yorkshire League match with Denaby at Kiveton, when the visitors went down 2-0.
On the two occasions that ,Kiveton scored, the Denaby defence were caught flat-footed and floundering. They broke all the rules of football in defence by squaring up to the lively opposition attack and consequently paid for it. Dearly too for they lost the division lead to their conquerors and allowed Bridlington Trinity’ to consolidate their overall hold on, the Division 1 championship.
In all fairness to Denaby, however, it was a very unlucky day for them and one had the impression that however much they tried they could not have scored that day.
It started after Cooper had made an opening, carried on by Parker (B), and then Cooper sliced what looked like the easiest of scoring chances. Then, of course Whitaker had a penalty shot saved by Wright ten minutes from time.
Never Recovered
This early miss by Cooper put Denaby in a rut from which they never recovered, despite some good midfield work by the industrious Wood and Whitaker, and in retrospect it seems that if Cooper had converted that early chance then Denaby could have salvaged at least a point.
Whatever Denaby threw at the Kiveton Park defence, excellently marshalled by the veteran Meechan, it was repelled fairly easily. Wright was called upon once or twice to keep his goal intact but S. Taylor and Pashley and, to a lesser extent Dodd, all did a, magnificent job.
What it difference there was at the other end where the visiting defence never looked completely in control and committed frequent fouls, particularly on the bruised P. Taylor who took the “stick” with remarkable calmness.
Both Kiveton goals came in almost identical fashion. Booker ran past defenders to hit a glorious first time shot past Smith in the fourth minute and a minute before half-time Conally ran all of 13 yards to a loose ball hovering between C. Parker and Caunt and easily beat. Smith.
