Cadeby Miners Concession
A scheme, whereby over 200 miners at Cadeby colliery are to earn approximately 10 shillings less per shift at their own request, has been agreed upon
This scheme, put forward at a mass meeting on Sunday resulting from strikes on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of last week, was unanimously accepted by the men to save others from losing as much as 35 shillings per shift.
The scheme proposes that seven men and the ways of six at the coalface, and instead of six men earning approximately 70 shillings a shift seven men would each receive approximately 60 shillings a shift to accommodate the surplus coal face workers in the pit caused by the closure of two faces due to surface subsidence.
Mr Albert Bright, N.U.M. branch president at Cadeby told a “South Yorkshire Times” reporter that the men were prepared to sacrificed to save others from losing so much money.
At the meeting on Sunday the men agreed to return to work on Monday pending negotiations by their N.U.M. officials over the proposed scheme.
They first came out on strike on Monday afternoon last week when several men were moved from the coal face at 70s, a shift to other essential work in the pit at 34s. 9d a shift. The strike continued on Tuesday, finished on Wednesday, after mass meeting, and the pit was again affected by strike sons Thursday and Friday. About 7000 tons of coal have been lost.
The colliery was working normally on Monday.
