Mexborough and Swinton Times April 13, 1928
Good Friday.
Denaby, 4, Wombwell 2
The game opened sparklingly with Denaby on top for the first 15 minutes. Wombwell rapidly improved and the sport became exciting.
Johnson scored Denaby’s first goal with a screw shot after 17 minutes, and after 35 minutes Brunt equalised from a corner kick by Fisher. Five minutes later Fisher gave Wombwell, the lead.
Wombwell were much stronger at the opening of the second half but after five minutes Johnson headed a brilliant equaliser.
Bad feeling was introduced and after 38 minutes Pennington, fouled Ogley in the penalty area. Stevens saved brilliantly from Kelly.
With five minutes to go Johnson scored Denaby’s third, and from a, foul by Sweating who fisted, the ball out of goal, Ogley scored from the penalty.
The half was full of sheer muck and was a disgrace to both teams. It seemed impossible for opponents to meet without an exchange of fists or feet.
