Shiregreen say Sporting Swinton “Tops”
The Shiregreen – Swinton South Riding League match at Hatfield house Lane produced one of the most sporting finishes in Yorkshire Council cricket this season. These clubs lead division two of the South Riding League and Swinton players and their captain, Ernest Cadman, set a great standard of sportsmanship, losing four points when a draw might easily have been the result.
Rain began to fall when Shiregreen, with eight wickets in hand, required only 22 runs to win, but Swinton kept on the field, and while they lost the match they establish a fine reputation to their opponents. That’s cricket!
Shiregreen 126 for 3 Swinton 123
Swinton, runners-up to Shiregreen, drew a big crowd and taking first turn at the wicket, were soon in trouble when, with four runs scored, the opening batsmen were parted. W.B.Broadhead being clean bowled by Raynor. Two overs later R Senior, who filled the vacancy, was out to a real grand catch at point by E Gyte with only 14 runs scored. Such a start was never overcome. H. Parkin (22) and G Kitchen (21) batting well and I Goodwin (31 not out) both hit and ran well, but the innings closed at 123
Siregreen’s opening pair put on 68 and 92 was on the board when the second man was caught out. Scorers were, J Thomson (38), D Smith (44), his guy (15) and a lively 25 not out K Phelan. In a grand finish the score closed at 126 for 3.
A Blinding Pitch?
Darfield 130 Wath 120
The closing stages of the Darfield v Wath South Riding League match at Darfield were exciting for both the Darfield spectators and players, for with a quarter of an hour to go Wath had only 16 runs to get a win. They did not achieve this, however, for Hirst caught and bowled Heaton for five, making the Wath total 120 against Darfield 130.
Routledge (30) open well for Darfield. Fieldsend took four for 23 and Hargreaves two for 15 for Wath, for whom Cutts scored 19, Heaton 20 and Hargreaves 28. E Hirst took three for 12 and Mynett two for 11 for Darfield
Reserve was Hero.
Brodsworth 33 Mexborough 34 for 4
B. Williams chosen as reserve for Mexborough in their away South Riding league game at Brodsworth, came into the side and caught the headlines. Bowling unchanged with R Hydes (four for 13) they skittleed Brodsworth out for 33. Extras, seven, accounted for the biggest contribution and Williams bowling return was six for 13. Mexborough won by six wickets
Rain Spoilsport.
Firbeck 150 for 6 Denaby 201
Denaby and Cadeby (201), were in a winning position at Langold against Fireack in the Yorkshire Council when rain intervened and the last 45 min were played in a drizzle. Purbeck who batted from a 60 overs, and scored 150 for six. For Denaby E.Waddington took three for 48 and I.K.Cuts scored 37.

Mitchell Main v Bentley
In reviving the glory of the old tradition at Mitchell Main, Jack Wroe is plain a notable part. Roe contributed to a great victory over Bentley at Mitchell main in the South Riding League on Saturday by taking eight wickets for 43 runs (six of them clean bowled). That brings his season’s total to 47 wickets and with an average of 8.5 per wicket, they should put him in the running for the council averages. Keep it up Jack! You must have plenty of stamina. Congratulations on bowling 90 min unchanged.

Those who face Jack Kerry at the nets at Swinton swear that his bowling at the nets was always far better than the match bowling. His fastish off breacks are often dangerous, but never did they seem to do the trick in the Council. Came Collegiate to the Swinton ground recently, and Jack bowling slower than usual, had a good day, finishing up with five for 28. Swinton can use a few more of these performances.Jack after attending Mexborough Grammar school and Borough Road College, London, was taking into the R.A.F.. Four years with the R.A.F., including two in Singapore and then back to his beloved sports, football and cricket. He has always been a Swinton member, and after several matches with the second string – 78 against Mexborough last year – he was promoted to the Council side.
A likeable chap with fair, unruly hair, is now one the most popular club members, and after his performance against Collegiate everyone was happy.
Jack is married and has one child. His home is at 47, Highfield Road, Swinton, no more than 100 yards from the ground. A grand club man.

A word to the South Riding League leaders, Hemsworth, you’re slipping! A couple of defeats and a drawn game inside eight days just will not do. At Elsecar on Saturday you got the runs but did not get the wickets. At Denaby the previous week, you neither got the runs or the wickets… And on Friday, Scunthorpe – how the Yorkshire Council spills into other counties territory these days – put you out of the Council Victory Cup.
