Burglary Charge at Rotherham

Yesterday morning, at Rotherham West Riding Court, Joseph Newey, of Mexbro’, and John Hargate, of Denaby, miners, were remanded on a charge of burglary at Swinton.

In the early hours of Sunday morning the house and shop of Samuel Howett, 21, Road, Swinton, were entered and 11s. 10d. stolen, together with a glazier’s diamond worth 10s.

Sergeant Dyson proved the arrest of the men at Mexbro’.

Hargate replied “I do not want to say anything,” and Newey answered, I am not guilty.”

He afterwards stated that threw the glazier’s diamond into the canal at Mexbro’.
