Ex Mexborough Players Shine In Denaby Squad
Denaby United 3, Farsley Celtic 1.
The most ardent Mexborough Town supporter would not have felt out-of place at Denaby United’s 3-1 Tickhill Square drubbing of Farsley Celtic on Saturday.
Tommy Law and Johnny Gilbert have been lured away from over the crossings and on the wings there is another convert, Morley.
The trio, teamed with Whittaker and Whitehead, look like providing one of the most effective forward lines in the Yorkshire League.
Denaby stormed straight on top and when Celtic left half Brown snatched the ball off Morley’s toes, Peter Caunt made no mistake with the penalty.
Celtic dropped out of the game badly, and when they did threaten, Gordon Smith seemed impregnable in the Denaby goal.
Most of the Denaby forwards had had bad luck with shots, and a little concentration could have seen them well ahead after 45 minutes. As it was they went only another one up through Gilbert after a half hour.
Complacency started to stalk the Denaby ranks, although a nice Ainscough goal broke the monotony in the 85th minute.
Exley managed to snatch one back for the dispirited visitors in the last minute.
Denaby can be pleased with their new line-up, although I cannot see that Millington can be kept out for long, as he was in this match. All that is needed is some determination.
