Matt and Charlie Were There Again

Denaby United are through to the first round, for the first time since 1932 when they were defeated 1-0 by a fluke goal at Carlisle. And cheering them on on Saturday at Goole were Matt Taylor (picture) and Charlie Mountford, the two fullbacks who were in the Denaby first round lineup 26 years ago.

Charlie now lives in Thorn but Matt, now a committee member of Denaby United FC retired recently from the secretary – managership of the club because of ill health

In Goole Towns, official programme for Saturday’s cup tie, the writer of the feature “Welcome to Our Visitors” recalls that Denaby and Goole, although comparatively near neighbours, and only met twice in the F.A. Cup competition — 11 years ago when Goole won 5-3 at home and in pre-war years when they lost 2-1 at Denaby.

The writer continues; “Denaby are finding victories this season difficult to come by, and that in spite of their obvious playing strength. Their centre-forward Swaby is a man to watch, for he has a habit of scoring goals. In fact the Denaby forwards in recent weeks have become a powerful force, and when it is also remembered that a goalkeeper of Smethurst’s ability can no longer find a regular place in the side, while full-back Lawley has to give way to Bedford, it will be seen that, in spite of their rather low position In the League table, Denaby are a sign of great possibilities.”
