Villa, Rovers are interested in Denaby’s Swaby

First Division club Aston Villa are known to be interested in Denaby United’s brilliant young centre-forward Paul Swaby, who now has 19 goals to his credit this season.

One of Villa’s scouts was at London Rd, Grantham on Saturday when Paul, a 24-years-old schoolteacher from Cleethorpes, scored his first ever hat-trick and the club’s first this season.

Two other League clubs known to be interested in him are Doncaster Rovers and Barnsley.

Under Father’s Eye

Among the crowd at London Road was Paul’s father, Mr. Harry Swaby, who played halfback from Grantham In the 1930’s before moving to Gainsborough Trinity — also Paul’s previous club. Mr. Swaby, who is present at most of United’s matches, has also been on the books of Barnsley, Grimsby Town and Scarborough.

Chatting to a “South Yorkshire Times” reporter after the match, he said Denaby had done very well to force Grantham to a draw. “The point they get from this match should give them the confidence they need,” he said.
