Picking a Quarrel.
At Doncaster yesterday, collier named William Schanult was charged with assaulting another collier named Enoch Sheldon, at Denaby, on Saturday night, and further with being drunk and disorderly.
Complainant said he had just arrived with friend by train from Doncaster, and was walking towards Denaby when defendant accosted him, saying, “Are you the two who have been challenging out to fight?”
Witness replied, “No,” but defendant said, “You are.” He assured him he was mistaken, but defendant taking him unawares struck him the face, and sent him staggering across the road. Whilst he was picking his hat up defendant struck his friend on the face.
Defendant was fined 20s. and 16s. 6d. costs for the assault, and 5s. and Costs for the other offence.
