Unemployment Scheme.

Proposed Conisboro’ Improvements to Cost £26,000.

Conisborough Urban Council discussed at length schemes whereby the often-criticised streets and backyards of Denaby are to be improved. The Council were asked to make application to the Unemployment Grants Committee for a grant towards the cost of re-surfacing the front streets and certain back streets an estimated cost of £15,000, the cost not covered by the grant to be met half by the Council and half the colliery company or other owners in their respective proportions; and for a grant towards the cost of £11,000 for re-surfacing other backyards at Denaby, the cost not covered by the grant to be met by the owners and quarter by the Council.

Councillor Gomersall said they were building up hopes of receiving sympathetic treatment to enable them to solve the bad social conditions and do something for the unemployed.

Objections were raised to the increase of £150 per annum in the clerk’s salary. It was contended that the Finance Committee minutes had not been confirmed the Council, but the Chairman said the matter was confirmed at the last meeting, and no action could be taken.

It was stated that over £25,000 was outstanding the end of the year in general district rates.
