Denaby Boxers Figure In Contests At Stalybridge.
Billy Smith (Denaby) was beaten on points over 10 rounds by a narrow margin at Stalybridge, last night.
In the sixth round Smith went down through questionable blow, but was able to continue. He boxed cleverly, and did not deserve to lose.
Steve Firman (Denaby) paid the penalty of giving away 18lb. in meeting Cyclone Ovey (Oldham) over ten rounds. Firman was down for count of nine in round seven. Ovey sent in a blow very low in the fifth round. Firman boxed cleverly, but Ovey’s heavy right punch to the body told the game proceeded. In order to avoid a knock-out blow Firman had to adopt smart ring craft.
A points decision for Ovey did not meet with the approval of the crowd.
