Poor Support
Future of Denaby United Club in the Balance.
Though the club is not in debt, the future of the Denaby United Football Club, members of the Midland League, hangs in the balance. Since the resignation of the chairman (Mr. H. Holley) and the secretary (Mr. W. Astbury), the committee have tendered their resignations.
The club has not been very well patronised of late, and on Saturday more was taken at the boxing tournament than at the gate of the football match. The reason for the resignation of the committee is hard to find, but it is known that the poor support of the club has had a disheartening effect.
A new committee has been formed, but there will be difficulty in continuing the present season’s fixtures. Mr. R. Kelly has been appointed chairman, and Mr. T. Swinburn secretary-manager. Only three of the old committee have thrown in their lot with the new committee.
One of the old committee, interviewed our representative, said that they could not understand why some people considered Midland League football should not be continued in the district.
They were going to do their utmost to waken enthusiasm and that an appeal would be made at one of the home matches. Sixty pounds was due from the Sports Allocation Fund towards the cost of a new stand, but as that was already paid for, that amount would be available for general use.
In the meantime, the club’s fate hangs in the balance.
